KMS UPDATE October 20, 2023

KMS Parents and Students,

It is really hard to believe that we are entering into the last two weeks of October! I can not stress this enough, but it really has been an amazing first quarter at KMS. Last week, we had our 1st Kirtland Academic Academy during delayed start and it was extremely beneficial for the students that attended. Please read through the newsletter there is a lot of information about Red Ribbon Week, the school dance, food sign-up for the dance, Honor Club Induction, our 1st wellness challenge, and our cross country teams. . Finally, please check the important dates calendar on the bottom of the newsletter for future school events and the picture of our now OVERFLOWING LOST and FOUND. As always, have a next two weeks.

2023 KMS Honor Club Induction

The KMS Honor Club models itself after the National Junior Honor Society and the very first KMS Honor Club Induction took place in 1974. In order to be invited to apply to KMS Honor Club, students must earn a 3.6 minimum GPA in their core classes, garner four character recommendations and write an application essay.

While academic excellence is the foundation of KMS Honor Club, volunteerism is a crucial component and expectation as members are required to complete a minimum of 16 volunteer hours over the course of each membership year. That volunteer work can be completed in the Kirtland schools, the larger Kirtland community and beyond. Congratulations to the 33 new Honor Club members.

Elliana Allen, Corinne Ayers, Jacob Brandal, Ella Brown, Elle Ciavarelli, Daniel Corcoran, Gabriella D’Amato, Ioana Donca, Mairin Fini, Jordan Force, Sara Garvin , Ava Kostelnik, Grace Kostelnik, Gwyneth Kraft, Carmella Lozar, Holden Martinez, Rylan Martinez , Alivia Mason, Vivian Michaels, Nadija Mrva, Mark Nalepka, Chloe Nay, Cole Nowacki, Milan Paulic, Payton Phillips , Mary Potter, Michael Quinn, Annalin Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Courtney Svoboda, Alaniz Tortorici, Evan Vickers, and Nicole Yarovitskiy

First Wellness Challenge of the Year - Lap Challenge

Last week the staff at KMS began our first wellness challenge of the year and I figured why not include the middle school in it as well. So, for the last week and a half the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have been counting all the laps they have completed on the new track. The 7th and 8th graders have really become super competitive and have put up some amazing numbers. The 6th grade is still super active, but have spent the majority of their energy playing gaga, football, soccer, and volleyball. The competition will run through the end of October. In November we will begin a new challenge, which I will share with the students sometime during the last week of October. I couldn't be more proud of the effort these students have put in so far.

Lost and Not Yet Found Items

The lost and found area is no longer filling up but has exploded onto another table!!! Please remind your son or daughter to check the area in the lobby, if they are missing lunch boxes, water bottles, coats, shirts, hoodies, etc. If they are missing anything there is a good chance it is there. There is a lot of really nice stuff that needs to find its way back to it's owner.

Kirtland Middle School - Important Dates 2023-2024

The link provided will take you the Kirtland Middle School - Important Dates for the 23-24 school year. There are still a few things that need to be added at the end of the school year, but they will be updated in the next couple of days. My goal for the year is to be as transparent as possible to major events taking place down the road at the school. I will continue to add to the important date section of the newsletter for upcoming events, but if you are wanting to plan for things, please refer to this document.
