KMS Parents and Students,

***This email has a lot of important information contained within it, so we recommend starring or saving this email for your reference.***

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break. I’m so excited to announce that I’m now the new principal at Kirtland Middle.  I am so thankful for all the guidance that Mr. Amstutz provided.  I’m confident this is going to be even more amazing.  The school is becoming more active with all of the students returning for practices and that means a new school year is right around the corner. I’m so excited to see everyone start to get back into the groove of another school year. Below you will find initial information for the start of the school year.

Schedule and Calendar for 2023-2024

  • 2023-2024 calendar and schedule

    • During the first week of school (August 17-18) we will run a 7-period day both days of school (Thursday and Friday)

      • Please note that we will not have a delayed start the first week of school.

      • Delayed start will begin the week of August 21st.

    • After this we will return to:

      • 7 period days on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday

      • “Blue Block” Days on Wednesdays

      • “Gold Block” Days (w/delayed starts) on Thursday

6th Grade - New Student Orientation

On August 10th, we will have 6th grade and new student orientation in the KMS gym. The orientation will begin at 6:30 pm. We will review important information about the upcoming year, the opportunity to explore the building, and look for their locker. 6th Grade students are also permitted to bring any and all locker/school supplies to set up their locker.

Important 7th Grade Laptop Distribution Information

All 7th grade students will receive their new Chromebook on the first day of school.  They will be distributed in their 1st period class.  For your convenience, the technology fee has been uploaded to Infinite Campus, so you may pay online prior to school starting. You can also pay by check or cash on opening day. Please note, if families do not have their Final Forms (Acceptable Use and Safety Guideline paperwork, etc.) completed and the technology fee of $40 paid, students will not receive their personal device.

Infinite Campus Reminder - Keeping Data Current

If you have not recently logged into Infinite Campus, please take a moment to do so now. It is important that you update your contact information so that the administration and staff can contact you for a variety of reasons. Please double check each email address linked to your Infinite Campus account.  Please notify Sandy Martz (sandy.martz@kirtlandschools.org) at the Board of Education if your address has changed.

  • Please check Final Forms to make sure you have filled out all forms.  It will be colored Green if it is complete - Red if it is missing information.  If you have questions please contact Jeannette Gordon (jeannette.gordon@kirtlandschools.org).

Backpacks / Lockers / Charging Laptops

We will continue our NO backpack policy this school year at KMS. Students should leave their backpacks in their lockers during the school day and only take what they need to class. Students will need to plan accordingly.

  • Note - it is crucial that all students get in the habit of charging their computer at night prior to coming to school.  Please remind your students nightly and have a plan at home. It is strongly recommended that students bring their laptop chargers with them to school each day as well, in case they need to charge their device during the day for any reason.

Other Information

KLSD (K-12) will run a series of safety drills next week. These are only drills. We will be sure to communicate that clearly to the students. Prior to each drill, teachers will discuss what we are doing and why, as well assure the students that we are practicing situations so that we can keep each other safe. We will perform a lockdown and barricade drill, a mass evacuation drill, and a situational drill or a combination of both (barricade or evacuate). You can help by talking to your children at home about the importance of safety drills at school and reminding them not to worry, as we are just practicing!
