KMS/KHS Athletic Event Spectator Expectations

Dear KMS/KHS Families,

As we enter the Winter Sports Season, we wanted to remind you of the fan expectations here at Kirtland. Recently the OHSAA relaunched the “Respect the Game” program to address poor spectator behavior. This program was relaunched in large part due to the shortage of officials and referees throughout the state and country. The press release from OHSAA is attached to this email.

Similarly, at our most recent CVC Principals’ meeting, spectator conduct was a point of emphasis. CVC Operating Standard 6 addresses Spectator Conduct, and it is also attached to this email. Standard 6 outlines the consequences for unsportsmanlike fan behavior, which includes a one contest suspension and required online sportsmanship course.

To summarize the expectations of both the CVC Conference and OHSAA, appropriate conduct is expected of all spectators at Kirtland Local Schools events. It's important that we are setting an example for our student-athletes by exercising sportsmanship and respect for all. Failure to live up to those expectations will result in consequences. Below are a few key expectations for spectators:

  • Refrain from berating officials. They are human and will make mistakes. Publicly humiliating them will not be tolerated, nor help our team.
  • Cheering should be positive and focused on our Kirtland student-athletes. Refrain from publicly singling out student-athletes of other teams. Remember, they are kids.
  • Be respectful of coaches' decisions. Coaches put in an immense amount of time and sacrifice to support our student-athletes. Allow them to coach. If you have an issue, address it with them privately.

Kirtland is a great place with wonderful people. Let's make sure we put that on display while attending our athletic events.

Thank you,

Victor Puskas, KHS Principal
Bob Race, KMS Principal
Matt Paul, KHS Assistant Principal and KMS/KHS Athletic Director
