Dear Kirtland Families, We hope you are having an awesome Friday! I wanted to share two expectations about Chromebook use that will hopefully keep them out of the repair system and in the hands of students. First, students should always keep their Chromebooks in their school-issued cases. These cases are designed to absorb some of the impact that an accidental fall might cause. The cases also shield the Chromebooks from any materials that might splash or spill on them. A Chromebook should be the only item in the school-issued case. We have been finding that accidental damage has resulted from Chromebooks being closed on objects like pens/pencils, and we understand that students are not doing this intentionally. Keeping those objects out of the case should help with this problem. Second, the student who is assigned to a Chromebook should be the only student touching that Chromebook. I want our students to hear my message clearly, "it's ok to help your peers. You can tell them how to do something on their device, but please don't do it for them." This expectation serves to make sure that any actions taken on a Chromebook are that of the student to whom the Chromebook has been assigned. Exceptions to this expectation must have the permission of Kirtland Schools staff. As a reminder, we do have a Board-approved fee schedule for device damage. The text of that policy is included below. When repairs for accidental damage are needed, the first accidental repair is a $25 charge. The second repair is a $35 charge. The third repair is a $50 charge. If a device needs repaired a fourth time then that student will lose their take home privileges. Additionally, if a fourth repair is needed, the fee will be the entire cost of the repair. These charges are yearly and start over with each new school year. Students are also responsible for the cost of replacing their power adapter. The replacement cost for a power adapter will range from $20 to $40 depending on the device.
